At the core of my therapy practice is the belief that all communication modalities are valued equally. Whether through oral speech, high-tech AAC, or lite-tech solutions, every form of communication is honored and respected. There is no 'better' way to communicate—what matters is what works best for each individual.
I believe that building strong, trusting relationships with children starts with being willing to embrace silliness and have fun. By being playful and goofy, I create a safe and engaging environment where kids feel comfortable to express themselves and connect on a deeper level. Laughter and joy are essential tools in fostering meaningful connections and promoting positive development.
I adhere to the principle of the least dangerous assumption. This mindset prioritizes providing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to children, erring on the side of caution. It's less risky to offer AAC to a child who might not need it than to withhold it from a child who does, wasting precious time that could have been used for effective communication support. Additionally, I believe in presuming potential—that every child has the capacity to learn if we provide the right tools and support. By assuming children can learn to communicate and actively teaching them, we avoid the more harmful assumption that they can't, which would result in missed opportunities for growth and communication development.
In my practice, I embrace neurodiversity by celebrating each individual's unique strengths. Rather than focusing on 'fixing' differences, I aim to support and empower every child to thrive in their own way. Every mind is unique, and my goal is to nurture and highlight each child's inherent abilities.
If these core values resonate with you and you're seeking compassionate and effective therapy for your child, I'm here to help. Contact me to discuss how I can support your child's communication journey.
